Reliable analysis results and quick response times

The Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Pharmacology at OUH, produces over 10 million laboratory results every year. The department plans and evaluates the workflow for diagnostics and assess quality of blood sampling, medical equipment and laboratory results. They strive to deliver laboratory analyses that provide the highest value for patient care, at best in collaboration with the relevant physicians and/or external partners who develop diagnostic technologies.

The departments research and innovation projects include development and assessment of new laboratory analyses and evaluation of biomarker performance in clinical practice. They focus on tools for decision support for the physician and the patient, including algorithms that automatically request relevant laboratory analyses and/or interpret patient information and laboratory results. The basis for these projects are the vast amount of laboratory data (stretching 10-20 years back) and the access to patient journals (with the relevant ethical permissions). Of note, the postanalytical area (i.e. how the laboratory result is handled) is probably one of the most important aspects in future laboratory medicine.
