Department of Surgery (A)
Surgical department with three physical locations
The Department of Surgery is a surgical department which carries out screening, diagnostics, treatment and care in relation to surgical gastrointestinal diseases, and diseases which are a consequence of congenital abnormalities in the gastrointestinal system.
The Department receives patients from the Department of Emergency Medicine and elective patients from the Region of Southern Denmark and Region Zealand.
The Department includes wards, outpatient departments and surgery departments.
AI at the Department of Surgery
The clinical application of AI in the Department of Surgery is presently concerning picture analysis in diagnostic, endoscopic procedures. A number of algorithms have been developed to assist picture analysis in camera capsule endoscopy, mainly in the field of polyp and cancer detection. The algorithms increase the quality of analysis concerning polyp detection, polyp size, location and quality of bowel preparation, reduces inter-observer variation and saves time and money.
The most promising features are entirely new diagnostic possibilities such as in situ histological characterisation of polyps for risk stratification, which might reduce unnecessary procedures such as resection of non-neoplastic polyps.
In the future, AI will be a valuable tool in many diagnostic and staging procedures in clinical surgery.
