The Danish Skin Cancer Model (DaiSiCaM)

Skin lesion consultations concerning fear of skin cancer are overwhelming the healthcare system, with waitlists lasting up to 42 weeks, resulting in delayed skin cancer treatments and high socioeconomic costs.

Up to 99% of dermatological consultations are conducted physically, causing significant geographical inequality in dermatological care.

Furthermore, essential diagnostic data are lost between the healthcare sectors resulting in less accurate diagnostics and many unnecessary biopsies and subsequent histopathological evaluations. Finally, there are no clinical feedback loops within the current system of dermatological evaluation, meaning that the clinicians’ learning curves stall. There is therefore a pressing need for a more efficient, coherent, and safe cross-sectorial workflow for skin cancer diagnostics and treatment in Denmark.

Aim

The aim is to provide efficient, fast and cheap diagnostics of patients with suspected skin cancer through the use of a telemedical solution called teledermoscopy (TDS).

The project seeks to validate and promote the implementation of a new digitally enhanced workflow called the Danish Skin Cancer Model via the platform Dermloop, which is currently being implemented at Odense University Hospital. The platform should provide resource optimisation through virtual consultations (TDS) and an AI tool to guide general practice in image diagnostics, as well as complete data-exchange across healthcare sectors and ensure individualised continuous medical education and clinical feedback for healthcare staff. 

The Danish Skin Cancer model is expected to result in significant diagnostic and socioeconomic improvements for patients, clinicians, as well as the healthcare sector.
