Patients and relatives focused on trust and transparency in the use of AI in healthcare

On 6 November, 2025, CAI-X, on behalf of the EU projects AICE, EUCanScreen and PREMIO COLLAB, held a dialogue meeting for patients and relatives on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The purpose of the meeting was to gather participants' perspectives, expectations and concerns about the use of AI in future cancer diagnostics and treatment.

Participants particularly called for transparency, explainability and clear responsibility when AI is used in clinical decisions. They stressed that the doctor should continue to have the ultimate responsibility and that the technology should be explained in an easily understandable language. Patients also wanted assurance that AI solutions are tested and quality assured under Danish and European conditions.

There was broad support for the use of health data if consent, data security and purpose are clearly communicated. It was emphasised that consent should be communicated in clear and understandable language and that it should be transparent who has access to the data and for what purpose. In addition, the possibility of choosing between different levels of consent was discussed.

Several emphasised that AI can create value when used as a support tool that frees up time for patients – not as a replacement for the clinician. Patient-friendly answers from artificial intelligence should be doctor-verified, as the doctor's approval of the answer creates security and credibility.

Patients and relatives expressed both hope and confidence that AI can contribute to earlier diagnosis, more accurate treatment and better patient outcomes, as long as the technology remains human-centric. CAI-X will take the inputs further in the work of developing and implementing AI solutions that strengthen the patient's role and ensure transparency, accountability and understandable communication throughout the healthcare system. The experiences from the dialogue will be included in the future work with the EU projects.
