GynLoop

In Denmark, 250,000 gynaecological examinations are performed annually outside the screening programme, but unfortunately, nearly half of all abnormal findings are overlooked during these examinations. This can result in serious diseases, such as cervical cancer, being detected and treated too late.

Cervical diagnostics, which involve examining the cervix to detect cancer or precancerous lesions, often rely on personnel with specific experience and training in the field. Currently, many healthcare professionals performing gynaecological examinations lack the necessary training, which can lead to misdiagnoses and unnecessary referrals.

Furthermore, women who test positive in cervical cancer screenings often require a specialist examination, such as colposcopy (a type of microscopic examination of the cervix). However, even experts can struggle to make an accurate diagnosis using colposcopy; this often results in multiple biopsies being taken, a process that is both uncomfortable for the patient and costly for the healthcare system.

Aim

The aim of GynLoop is to provide healthcare professionals with better tools for detecting cervical abnormalities, thereby ensuring earlier treatment.

The GynLoop project stems from the PEACE project and builds upon the DermLoop platform, which is used to diagnose dermatological conditions. The goal is to create a digital tool that enables general practitioners and nurses to receive personalised skills development and expert consultation from specialised gynaecologists at OUH in cases where the diagnosis is uncertain. GynLoop will thus help prevent errors and ensure that the right patients are referred for further examination. Furthermore, GynLoop will offer advanced training in identifying biopsy sites, helping gynaecologists perform procedures with greater precision.
